Our Goals:

The English Language Learner (ELL) program supports children from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Assistance for ELL students requires attention to language proficiency, intellectual development.

Literacy

In the primary classroom we believe:

  • All children should view themselves as readers and writers.

  • Children need to be engaged in authentic daily reading and writing activities, at their instructional level and of their own choice.

  • Children learn best when teachers are great literacy motivators.

  • Literacy means not only to read, write, speak, and listen, but also to use language to learn, think, and communicate effectively.

  • Classrooms need to be print-rich and to contain a wide variety of reading materials, resources, and technology to support a child’s literacy development.

  • Children need to enjoy reading and writing and develop life-long literacy habits.

Balanced Literacy:

Balanced Literacy is a framework for teaching literacy that includes some or all of the following important elements: Word Work(Concepts of print,Phonological awareness,Phonics,Vocabulary Spelling & Word Study) Reading (Read Aloud,Share Reading,Independent Reading) Writing(Modelled Writing,Shared/interactive Writing,Independent Writing)

Numeracy:

We believe:

  • All students should begin to explore what a mathematician is by participating in activities that promote and encourage:

    • curiosity and a sense of wonder

    • playfulness

    • flexibility

    • sense making

    • resilience

  • Children develop a mathematical foundation by building beliefs about what mathematics is and what it means to understand and “do” mathematics.

  • Children need to be actively engaged in doing Mathematics with hands on manipulatives daily.

  • Children are influenced by the positive attitude about mathematics from the adults around them.

  • Children need high quality problems to solve that relate to their real world where possible.

  • Cross curricular connections make learning mathematics more meaningful and add to understanding

Mission:

Building a solid foundation.

Expanding your child’s world (making new friends and working with others)

Learning through play (exploring, creating and doing)

Growing and Maturing (Developing new skills)

Focusing on the whole child (artistic and aesthetic development, emotional and social development, intellectual development, social responsibility )
